WHAT FABRIC SHOULD I CHOOSE?
WHAT FABRIC SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Not sure which fabric to choose from the available options? Here's a quick guide on the differences.
If weight of the bag is your biggest concern, then Ultra TX70 and UltraGrid will be your best option. If a bag with more structure and "body" is what you're wanting, then EPX200 or RX30 would be a better choice.
Challenge Outdoor UltraGrid & Ultra TX70:
A solid, lightweight and super strong fabric. UltraGrid is a 100% recycled nylon that's 210D and features a double Ultra fiber ripstop that makes it incredibly strong, and nearly impossible to rip. At 146 gsm, it's a touch heavier than Ultra TX, but offers more color options. UltraGrid is a single layer, woven fabric. It's a Backcountry Exposure favorite.
The ultralight hiker go to. Ultra TX70 is a 3 layer laminate with a 70D polyester ripstop face fabric, crossply ultra fiber and PET film that can be seam taped. It's lighter weight at 99 gsm and is ideal for when grams count.
Challenge Outdoor EPX200:
EPX200 is a laminate style fabric with a recycled 200 denier face fabric and a 70 denier polyester liner that adds durability and strength to the fabric. It's also treated with a C0 DWR coating that makes it water proof.
X-Pac RX Fabrics:
X-Pac RX30 has a 3 layer laminate construction and features a 300 denier face fabric. For maximum durability and structure on the bag, go with RX30.
ARE THE BAGS WATERPROOF?
ARE THE BAGS WATERPROOF?
Backcountry Exposure bags are highly water resistant. All of the fabrics used on our bags are waterproof through environmentally friendly PU and DWR coatings, or lamination.
Bags that use a zipper for the opening are not seam taped or sealed.
Roll Top bags without a zipper ARE seam taped, like the Aven Roll Top Food Bag.
Why do you not seam tape/seal all of your bags?
Seam sealing adds significant time and cost to production and in many cases, sealing isn't necessary for the function of the bag. Our bags will resist water from a light rain and keep contents dry. Any gear items of concern in getting wet should be placed into a dry bag that's designed to be 100% waterproof.
Bags can be seam sealed or taped by you should you decide to do that yourself.

Dry bags can be a critical piece of gear for hikers, especially in wet environments. The Aven Roll-Top Dry Bag is built to make it easy to carry gear like clothing, sleeping gear, electronics, etc and be protected from the wet.
Available in two sizes, 3 liters and 5 liters these bags are large enough to stuff a summer quilt, extra clothing, a hammock and suspension, electronics and more.
These bags are made from incredibly durable UltraGrid and UltraTX fabrics, while also being ultralight. The Aven Roll-Top Dry Bag is fully seam taped to keep water out.
Just like our popular Aven Roll-Top Food Bag, the Aven Dry Bag features a flat bottom that allows it to stand on its own and with a slight curve in the bottom, and more usable space in the bag.
**While the fabrics used are waterproof and the bags are seam taped, these bags are not 100% waterproof. Without heat welded seams, tape can peel over time from normal use.

Recently I was out and packed up late at night. My tent was a dry but moisture had already soaked my tent floor. I rolled up the tent and floor as normal and headed out. When I got home the whole tent was damp with moisture soaking through the tent bag and onto other gear. So I contacted Devine to recommend a product that I could put any wet part of my tent into to separate it from other gear. He recommended the 5l bag which is perfect.
A solution to a problem that had frustrated me for years. Thanks Devin for first class service and outstanding products.
