Fehr lake may be one of the best short hikes in the Uinta Mountains. Sitting at right around 10,000′, this small Uinta lake has beautiful views, big meadows and easy access.
When driving Mirror Lake highway from Kamas you’ll eventually make your way into the lake region of the Uinta mountains and up over Bald Mountain Pass. Once over the pass if you aren’t paying attention you’ll miss the trailhead to your right for Fehr Lake. Often packed with cars, you’ll want to get the the trailhead early to beat the crowds. But one nice thing about Fehr lake is many people hike past to the larger Hoover and Marshall Lakes. Even though these other lakes further down the trail are enticing, Fehr makes for a casual walk for families, and hikers just wanting something close.
The Hike –
What makes Fehr lake such a great day hike for families is the 1/2 mile of down hill hiking from the trailhead. What I love about this trail is walking next to a stream as you get closer to the lake and the various board walks. Some of the trail is a little rocky, but nothing too difficult. Grab a snack, a lunch and enjoy an afternoon of fishing and hanging out at really a beautiful Uinta Lake.
If going further is in the cards, then take the time to hike past Fehr and spend time at Marshall, Shepherd, and Hoover Lakes. These are much larger lakes, and there is even a mini waterfall to check out there too.
Keep in mind that Fehr lake is right at about 10,000 feet, so unplanned weather can move in fast and temperatures can change quickly. Regardless of the distance to hike to the lake, be prepared for weather and high altitude.
